As an 11th and 12th grade English teacher frequently my impact can be seen after my students graduate. One student has told me she is now going to be a teacher because of my influence. In my Yearbook classes I taught students page design marketing and public relations. These real-life skills extend beyond the classroom walls and impact students for a lifetime. While I am pleased to see my footprint on academia I am prouder of the lasting impressions that I have had on my students as people. My teaching role has morphed into a mentorship. I’ve been asked guidance regarding career choices and family situations. I’ve helped students earn internships and have supported them through heartaches. This is what I treasure most. My goal is to inspire kindness and creativity. I have “Motivational Mondays” where students write compliments about one another and then read them to the class. Since I currently teach in an area that was directly impacted by the Stoneman Douglas shooting I incorporate compassion throughout my curriculum. Academically I foster creativity by providing opportunities for self-expression. Students write spoken word poems design websites and create board games in addition to traditional assignments.
