Roger Williams Middle School
Providence, RI
Ms. Barlow teaches middle school performing arts in an urban school. I worked with Ms. Barlow this year. She works hard to support a diverse learning community. Approximately 31% of her students are multilingual learners and over 50% come from homes where English is not the primary language. She works hard to teach her students English and makes sure her lessons are available in a variety of languages. Ms. Barlow also works with special education students. She helps them build confidence by getting them on their feet to play games and engage in reader’s theatre. This school year has posed challenges. She has been in person with students for the entire year. Everyday she simultaneously teaches students in person and those and at home (via Zoom). She has worked hard to learn a variety of technology. Ms. Barlow is a great person. When she is not at work she takes care of 3 special needs dogs including a blind dog and a dog who is paralyzed. She also volunteers in her community helping out with animal rescue and serving meals to those in need. Ms. Barlow is passionate about the arts in education. I have seen her show up for students this school year. I know that she loves Norwegian and it would be amazing to see her win this prize!
